Airbrush Stenciling

Airbrush stenciling allows you to create your own flawlessly unique design even if your drawing skills are unrefined.

As a neater and more controlled alternative to spray painting, airbrushing distributes a fine spray of paint to a surface. By reducing the complications of shading and highlighting, airbrush stenciling makes it easy to fill in large areas of a stencil. Airbrush stenciling also makes it easier for you to paint within a stencil's basic design, giving you the chance to use your imagination to make your own changes to the design.

With a vast selection of paint types, colors and designs to choose from, airbrush stenciling is a great way to discover your artistic abilities, while enhancing nearly any surface.

Common Paints used for Airbrush Stenciling

Before you try airbrush stenciling, you should recognize the various types of commonly-used paints. These are classified into two categories: transparent and opaque.

Transparent
• Allows light to pass through so bodies can distinctly be seen
• Thinner than opaque colors, making them easier to use
• Blend much easier to produce new colors

Water colors
• Water-based colors well-suited for use in an airbrush
• Available in pre-reduced form or in tubes

Opaque
• Does not transmit light
• Generally has more pigments than transparent color, making them more likely to clog an airbrush
• Does not blend well

Gouache (a.k.a. Tempera)
• Water-based with a white pigment
• May be more difficult to use in an airbrush than water colors

Transparent or Opaque

Acrylics
• Long-lasting on almost any surface
• Textile paints (a category of acrylic paints) are used on various products, such as t-shirts, jackets and sweatshirts

Oil Paints
• Can be opaque or transparent, depending on how much you thin it with water
• Solvent-based
• Slow drying

Sign Paints
• Solvent-based
• Must be used in well-ventilated areas

Although a large majority of these paints can be found in various arts and craft shops, some can only be purchased at specialty shops, such as automotive paint suppliers.

Airbrushing a Stencil Design

Because airbrush stenciling can be somewhat of a challenge, you should attach the stencil to its designated area using masking tape. To avoid spraying paint on the surface, be sure to leave the tape lifted slightly off of the surface. Use the least amount of air pressure necessary to spray directly onto the stencil. Be sure to avoid spraying from right to left.

To help build intensity and depth to your image, you can layer small amounts of color. Just make certain the paint is dry before you decide to add additional colors.

Because the surface's texture can affect your airbrush stenciling results, it is important to use satin, eggshell or flat paint for best results. Waiting longer between the colors for the paint to dry may be helpful.

From red, green and orange to blue, yellow and purple, there are a variety of complimentary colors to use when airbrush stenciling. If you are confused as to which colors to use, you should examine a color wheel to help you determine which complimentary tones to use.

Once you begin your airbrush stenciling project, you should stencil your colors from light to dark. Also, be sure each color covers less than the color before it.

After you have sprayed your design, you can enjoy free-hand airbrushing to finish your creation, making the design uniquely yours.
