Want to add some decorative flair to your bare kitchen floor? Or put up an exotic border on your living room walls? While you're at it, why not redo the walls in your bedroom, as well?

Whether redecorating one room or your entire house, it is important to incorporate a unique, complementary style into the makeover, which is why you should consider redecorating with stencils.

A process of applying paint to cut-out areas of various materials, including plastic, heavy paper or metal, stenciling allows decorators to create beautiful rooms by repeating patterns on walls, fabrics, wood, stone and ceramics. Since there are a variety of different stencil designs to choose from, you should choose a style representing both your tastes and interests, while incorporating a distinctive flavor into your home.

With a wide array of color combinations to suit various decorating styles, such as natural bamboo colors in browns, greens, grays, metallic golds, reds and blacks on various colored backgrounds, oriental stenciling is an appealing choice.

A Guide to Oriental Stenciling

Oriental stenciling is a unique way to decorate a plain or diminishing surface in dire need of a revival. Before you begin the makeover process, you must first choose an Oriental stencil design. If you find yourself struggling between two or more designs, such as bamboos, lanterns and pagodas, you should feel free to use them all. However, if you do decide to use more than one design, be sure not to place them too close to one another; this way, you can avoid a cluttered and busy appearance.

To ensure your paint will adhere to the surface, you must be sure it is free of excess dirt, wax or grease. To be absolutely certain you have a clean surface, you can test a small part of the floor before you begin your Oriental stenciling project.

Next, you must choose which stenciling tool you are going to use, such as a stencil brush, which works best for preventing paint from getting under the edges of the stencil. Also, both a sponge and a foam roller work faster for covering large areas. After choosing your stenciling tool, you should find a way to keep your stencil in place. You can hold your stencil in one hand while you paint the design with the other. However, if this is a difficult task to accomplish, you can attach the stencil to the surface with a few pieces of masking tape or stencil adhesive.

After you begin stenciling your Oriental designs, remember to wipe off excess paint as it builds up on the stencil. Also, if you are repeating a pattern numerous times, be sure to mark the different positions with either a pencil or an erasable marker. By doing this, you can ensure your finished pieces are equidistant from one another. After each design has dried, you should protect it with a varnish covering.

As long as you allow yourself plenty of time to finish your Oriental stenciling project, you will be able to enjoy a decorative creation with enriching colors and an Oriental flavor you can be proud of for years to come.
